Dumb it Down

There is an odd habit of film titles being changed for the US market. I understand why the first Harry Potter film was called Harry Potter and the Scorcher’s Stone here and not Harry Potter and the Philosphers Stone, for that mirrored the book title. Mind you, that does not address the difference in the novel, which seemed to be doubt on the US publishers part that American children would understand the original title.

A film from Aardman Studios has just opened in the US. Here it is called The Pirates! A Band of Misfits , back in the UK it used the source book’s title The Pirates! In an adventure with Scientists. Was it concern that too many Americans distrust science that caused the change in title?
