Polls Can Be Wrong… I hope

I owe McCain an apology. I had thought that his choice of Sarah Palin was misguided and even insulting to women. People would not vote for that ticket just because his running mate was female. I forgot the first rule of judging the public; “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public” .

According to Reuters, McCain has seen a big swing to him among white female voters in recent polls.

  1. Sickening indeed….

  2. Pity the ignorant masses, as they will suffer if they elect this pair.

    Unfortunately, I will as well.

  3. Get your smack straight. The correct quote is “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.” – H.L. Mencken

Now go home if that is all you can say about us. Sheesh, Bloody Brits, we save your bacon and you still cry about us. Losers!

  4. The Mencken quote as worded in the post is correct. There is unfortunately a lot of confusion about the original quote; the misquote as listed in the comment above has spread all over, and I found thousands of hits when I did a search – mostly in blogs, but on some commercial sites as well.

The misquote is still pretty amusing – very much in keeping with the Mencken cynicism.
