I lived and worked in Portugal for two and a half years at the end of the eighties. During that time I acquired a taste for Licor Beirao, a Portuguese after drink. Other than a vacation ten years or so after leaving the country, the only place I had been able to find the drink was in Jersey in the UK Channel Islands. The island is home to a large Portuguese community. I have therefore had three bottles and a few glasses in the last nineteen years. It had been nearly nine years since I last tasted it.
On Saturday I was in our local Bevmo to buy a new shot glass and I saw a bottle of Licor Beirao. For the very first time in any non Portuguese store I could buy a bottle of my favourite liqueur. It tastes just as wonderful as I remember
