Today is the start of Euro 2008, a major football tournament like the world cup but with just European countries. The tournament has sixteen teams who reached the finals by competing in a two year qualifying tournament, apart from Austria and Switzerland who are joint hosts.
England are not in the finals after an especially inept qualifying tournament. The other three home nations; Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are also absent although their campaigns were not steeped in the deep ignominy of England’s failure.
The tournament will be covered on US TV by ESPN, so I can see at least some of the weekend games and if I avoid seeing the results I could use the DVR to capture weekday games that will broadcast while I am at work.
Having lived in Portugal for two and a half years, I shall support the Portuguese; despite them being responsible for eliminating England from the last World Cup and Euro 2004. Their first match is today starting a little before noon here.
Ah Scolari will be interesting, his antics always have me in hysterics! Alas my game is on Monday just sad re Robben, us women get attached to the players.
